Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli—A Summary of the Literature

چکیده
Diarrheal disease is still a major public health concern, as it considered an important cause of death in children under five years age. A few decades ago, the detection enteropathogenic E. coli was made by detecting O, H, and K antigens, mostly agglutination. The recent protocols recommend molecular methods for diagnosing EPEC, they can distinguish between typical atypical EPEC identifying presence/absence specific virulence factors. are defined diarrheagenic strains that produce attaching effacing lesions on intestinal epithelium while being incapable producing Shiga toxins heat-labile or heat-stable enterotoxins. ability these to enable them localized tightly surface epithelial cells, disrupting surfaces thus leading effacement microvilli. classified isolates, based presence absence adherence factor plasmids. All eae positive; eae+, bfpA+, bfpA?. No vaccines currently available prevent infections.

Escherichia coli strains of nonenteropathogenic serogroups carrying eae but lacking the enteropathogenic E. coli adherence factor plasmid and Shiga toxin DNA probe sequences were isolated from patients (children, adults, and AIDS patients) with and without diarrhea in Brazil. Although diverse in phenotype and genotype, some strains are potentially diarrheagenic.
متن کاملMouse model of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection.
Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is an important cause of diarrhea in humans. EPEC infection of cultured intestinal epithelial cells induces attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions, alters intestinal ion transport, increases paracellular permeability, and stimulates inflammation. The lack of a small-animal model has restricted in vivo studies examining EPEC-host interactions. The aim of th...
